(taxodium distichum)
Deciduous and kin to the redwood, when young, the cypress grows in a classic pyramidal with radiating branches. The bark is reddish brown, and the soft, feathery light green leaves are alternate, needle-like, and arranged in 2 rows, turning bright orange-brown in the fall. It is tolerant of both drought and poor drainage. Air is important to the root system, and in swamps, the roots come up for air in the form of “knees”; but in higher areas, the knees don’t form, and the tree thrives on dry sites. The fruit is a small cone. As it ages, it develops a broad, flattened crown. When older, the top dies and breaks off, and the tree tries to grow branches back down the trunk with a natural jinned apex remaining. Even the oldest trees sprout trunk buds each year, making bonsai training easier.
These are "pre-bonsai" trees that are in preparation for bonsai. They are in nursery growing pots instead of traditional bonsai pots.
