Very long-lived shrubs and trees, some are over 200 years old. It is a conical shrub with spreading branches that curve upwards at the tip. It is bushy and produces branches from its base. Its leaves are evergreen, with lobes often divided by spiny tips, dark green, and shiny; the lobe disappears with age, and only the spine at the end of the leaf remains. Small pinkish white, scented flowers appear in May-June. Shiny red berries ripen in September and last through winter.
