This Bonsai is also called a MADRONE or MANZANITA.
The Fruiting Strawberry Bonsai is native to the western Mediterranean and Ireland, it is a slow-growing semi-evergreen with attractive, peeling reddish brown bark, with alternate, leathery leaves. Its common name is derived from the clusters of strawberry-like fruits that ripen in the summer, and persist into late winter. The fruit is edible, but not tasty, unedo is translated: "I eat only one." The Portuguese use the fruit to make a strong alcoholic beverage "strawberry tree firewater." It is on the coat of arms of Madrid, Spain showing a bear reaching for its fruit. The white flowers are decorative, small, and urn-shaped. The new growth of green leaves exhibits a reddish cast.
This bonsai is a "pre-bonsai" tree that is in preparation for bonsai. It is in a nursery growing pot instead of a traditional bonsai pot.
